Connecting with others through food is one of the philosophies that inspired me to start Eat Up! Kitchen. I saw good people opening restaurants and produce markets and donating all their free time to feed the homeless. The fervor surrounding these people and the people they motivated made it clear; the capacity to feed others is a super-power, no matter how you do it.
It doesn’t take much; maybe a roast chicken or a salad or a pizza. Your effort is always appreciated even if you screw it up. I mean, it’s hard to be upset with someone who brings you a homemade pizza. I hope you are inspired and you soon experience the fulfilling warmth of feeding your friends and family.
For those magnanimous individuals who feel that feeding their friends and family just isn’t enough, I’ve compiled a list of charitable organizations* battling hunger, poverty, and social oppression.
See, it’s not only about the pizza that connects you and me. There’s communities and ecosystems and a world of diverse people we’re all connected to through food. We all share this crazy thing where we have to eat to survive. Giving to those who have nothing to give, your capacity to do a small good thing, that’s a super-power that could save lives.
Help Bring FarmerJawn Agriculture Vision to Life!
FarmerJawn Agriculture has an amazing opportunity to expand our enterprise to 2+ acres of land, 2 greenhouses, garage, historic springhouse and residence all of which need a lot of renovation, just a minute outside of Philadelphia. This location is accessible to the public by all forms of transit. This will also be the permanent home of our new non-profit, “FarmerJawn and Friends Foundation Fund” This fund will serve as an educational platform for organic urban agriculture, with plans to host our first conference in Fall/Winter 2022. Sunday Love
The Mission of The Sunday Love Project is to share food amongst Philadelphia’s homeless, while simultaneously building community. Our efforts aim to break bread with those who are struggling to make their way back into society as contributing members. We are a liaison between a hungry, struggling mind and a focused, nourished soul. Each week The Sunday Love Project serves over 500 meals to those in need.
Aging In Place
Nearly one in every six seniors in America faces the threat of hunger and not being properly nourished. This applies to those who aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from and those who don’t have access to the healthiest possible food options. The issue is severe enough that the AARP reports that seniors face a healthcare bill of more than $130 billion every year due to medical issues stemming from senior hunger.
Feed America
The Feeding America network is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, working to connect people with food and end hunger. Donors, staff, and volunteers all play an important role in our efforts to end hunger in the United States.
Oxfam
Oxfam is a global movement of people working together to end the injustice of poverty. With 70 years of experience in more than 90 countries, Oxfam takes on the big issues that keep people poor: inequality, discrimination, and unequal access to resources including food, water, and land. We help people save lives in disasters, build stronger futures for themselves, and hold the powerful accountable.
Heifer
We empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity – but our approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market.
Unicef
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in more than 190 countries and territories to put children first. UNICEF has helped save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization by providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more.
Environmental and Energy Study Institute
The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable societies. EESI believes meeting this goal requires transitions to social and economic patterns that sustain people, the environment and the natural resources upon which present and future generations depend. EESI advances innovative policy solutions that set us on a cleaner, more secure and sustainable energy path.
